Snagging a Prize

As a creative producer it’s important to have thick skin and believe in your own craft (while continually working to develop it, of course), yet it is always a nice treat to receive positive feedback from peers in your industry. I was notified this week that one of my images was awarded Second Place in a print competition of professional photographers. WPPI’s 2013 Second Half competition received over 2,000 entries from pro portrait and wedding photographers, and was judged by some of the leaders in our field. While I don’t often toot my own horn, I wanted to share this as it inspires me to go further next time around.

And finally, the winning image. The shot is part of the Falcon series I did as a personal project. I had a great small team of friends helping out and overall I’m really happy with what we came away with:

I encourage you to seek out honest forums for feedback in what you love to do, whether it is photography, filmmaking, writing, or knitting. Competition can help fuel creativity and push creatives past the inspiration plateaus that can strike without warning. Just keep in mind that the purpose is to help drive you forward, not merely give you the chance to compare your work to others. Go forth and be creative!
